What Are You Thinking About?
In my humble opinion, the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) in the basketball world is Michael Jordan. I know some people might argue otherwise, but for me, there will never be anyone better than MJ.
Full disclosure: I am a Tar Heel through and through. I did my undergraduate studies at UNC-Chapel Hill, and I bleed Carolina Blue. However, I admire MJ not just for being a Tar Heel and the best on the court, but for his relentless work ethic and unshakable mindset.
He once said, "If you can't stop thinking about it, don't stop working for it."
That quote recently showed up during one of my Pinterest scrolls, and it made me pause and reflect. I imagine that mindset guided him—not just through his legendary basketball career, but in many other areas of life as well.
From his time in college to dominating the NBA, to becoming a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist, Jordan is a living example of what it means to pursue your goals with purpose. He’s partnered with Nike and Gatorade, led professional teams as an owner, and continues to support organizations like the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
He clearly thinks about a lot—and follows through with action.
Turning the Question Inward
Let’s shift from MJ for a moment and focus on his quote:
What is it that you can’t stop thinking about?
That question can reveal what truly matters to you. When your mind wanders, where do your thoughts land?
By noticing those recurring thoughts, we can begin to understand what we’re really passionate about. More importantly, we can start to take action—because those persistent thoughts are like mental nudges toward what we’re meant to do.
Why This Matters
That quote from MJ also speaks to the power of resilience. Even when progress feels slow or setbacks arise, staying focused on what you care about can make all the difference.
As someone once said, "Never give up on the things and people who mean the most to you, because if you do, your life will lose meaning."
Let that sink in. The things you care deeply about—they're not just random thoughts. They're signs pointing you toward your purpose.
6 Simple Ways to Act on What Matters Most
Turning thoughts into reality isn’t about luck. It’s about being intentional. Here’s how to start:
1. Speak It & Write It Down
Say your idea out loud. Then write it down. Putting thoughts into words makes them more real and gives you a direction to follow.
2. Break It Into Steps
Big goals can feel overwhelming. Break them into smaller steps you can actually accomplish. Then check them off—each small win builds momentum.
3. Use the 30-Minute Rule
Dedicate 30 minutes a day to one goal for 30 days straight. No multitasking—just focused time.
If distractions pop up, pause, regroup, and refocus.
4. Visualize Your Success
Close your eyes and imagine what it will feel like when you achieve your goal. That mental image can be a powerful motivator.
5. Build a Support System
Share your goal with someone who will cheer you on. Whether it's a friend, mentor, or accountability partner, support helps you stay on track.
6. Be Consistent, Even When It’s Hard
Success rarely happens overnight. Keep showing up, even on the hard days. Every bit of effort adds up.
Final Thoughts
If something keeps coming to mind, don’t ignore it. That could be your calling trying to get your attention. Like MJ said—"If you can't stop thinking about it, don't stop working for it."
Your dream is worth the effort.
